It can get rather cold on the coast for short periods.

Yes, it gets cold but it doesn't last for long. I've stayed in both Destin FL and Gulf Shores AL in Jan & Feb and it can become quite chilly, especially if you are near the beach. The humidity sometimes makes it feel a lot colder too. But after a couple of nights, it's warm again. In my experience, this only happens for a few nights in Jan and Feb.

I suggest you use a link like this to see the highs and lows in 2015 and 2016.

You're best bet would be Miami and anything south of it. I was in Orlando the end of March 2 years ago and the high was 50.

If you're looking for a permanent home or secondary home, the Alabama Gulf Coast should be considered since the property taxes are a fraction of the cost compared to FL. The coldest month tends to be in Jan and it's usually only a day or two of chilly here and there, then moves back up to warmer temps. We have been enjoying 70's on and off all winter and still able to beach and boat regularly.

I will respond to your headline............The line for an average low temp during January of 50 is roughly a line from Birmingham Alabama to Atlanta Georgia.

Your OP and the headlines for this thread do not match.

The headlines is asking about an average temp of 50.
Of course, there will be days below 50 and days above 50.

That is what average means.

??? I come from the area you described and the average winter temps isn't 50. I'm pretty sure anyways. Maybe I'm wrong.

I maybe misunderstood the headline.

I thought the OP was asking what the average high temp in winter was.

Uhhhhh.......yes.

Southern Alabama is warm & hot. You might have two days that get "cool" during an extreme spike in the jet stream.

Oh noooooooo!

Oh, and Alaska gets cold, summers there are relatively cool, but sometimes gets a couple warm fronts. Not news.
