In Mobile, you must take hurricanes like a man. Tough it out.

Yes, most times it is just not worth leaving unless you are in danger of flooding/on or near water. Usually by the time it gets here, the wind speeds are lower anyway. My husband is a big baby and always wants to leave. A tree limb hits our house, big deal. At least we would be here to take care of leaks and make it better. We are about 2 miles from the riverfront.

I agree I wouldn't leave my house unless it was in a flood zone or if it was a CAT 4 (maybe) or 5. You will have to drive north probably pretty far to find a hotel and then the hurricane is probably going to be headed that way too, so unless it is a really bad one I wouldn't leave my house. Stock up on supplies and if you are worried about electricity then get a generator.

Memphis...and I'm only partly kidding. When Ivan came through, I had to go all the way to Memphis to find something. Everything along the I55 corridor was booked...

Katrina was CAT 3.

I recently moved away from the Mississippi coast, but while there if the weather disturbance began with a "H", I left. And that would be my advise.

Unless you live in an area where they call for a mandatory evacuation, I would stay also. However you need to still be prepared with emergency supplies and owning a generator can't hurt either, because there will be power outages. If it seems like it might get hairy then go to one of the local shelters till it passes. Fighting traffic, price gouging and driving hundreds of miles to find a motel room is more trouble than it's worth, just have a local evacuation plan and keep your emergency supplies stocked up well in advance.

^^And make sure you have plenty of fuel for that generator ahead of time too. Every year during hurricane season I make sure to have at least 5 gallons on hand, if we don't have any hurricanes I can simply put it into my car. Every year I see people wait until the last minute to fuel up, and that's the worst thing you can do.
