Hypothetically, do you all think that downtown could support a news vendor/stand? For instance, in front of Government Plaza there are about a dozen of those little plastic containers where you buy a paper. What if, instead of all those ugly things, there was a semi-permanent open air news vendor with a person to sell papers, magazines, gum and mints and whatever else? Just a thought.

That would be a good idea.

Glad someone agrees. Some sidewalk businesses (food carts, flower carts, fruit stands, etc) and artists/performers (musicians, jugglers, human statues, etc) would be really neat. But we would need more people down there for sure before all that could happen.

I think that would be a good idea. Every downtown or highly developed neighborhood needs (or deserves) one of these. If for nothing more than to establish a good atmospheric feel ...

I agree. The problem is, though, the newspapers. Many are having a hard time because they put their articles online for free and then no one wants to buy them. Then, if you try to charge to view it online, people would just go somewhere else to get it (yahoo, etc). I wouldn't be suprised to see the Register go under sometime in the near future, which is a shame.

Also, someone told me that the average age of a newspaper reader is 56! We can only hope that there are enough people who enjoy reading an actual print of the paper (not on a laptop or phone) to save the local paper. Those are the ones who read the paper with their coffee, or in the park, or up in bed, or whatever.

I think it would work, but I've noticed there is a ton of walking traffic on Royal now by Serda's during the business day. That could be good spot, too. I love newspapers and magazines; I rarely watch the tv news. It's not enough information for me. I don't really like to read large amounts on the internet.

I agree. It wouldn't have to be in that spot, I was considering the location you mentioned and maybe somewhere near Cathedral Square (not forgetting it's all hypothetical). Also, I would rather read the newspaper than get it online or TV.
