This used to be true. Over the past five years or so there are many new buildings and new dorms for the growing number of on-campus students. According to alumni newsletters there are many more new buildings to come in the next couple of years, in fact they just broke ground on a new computer science center that will include an information security center backed by money and guidelines from the department of defense.

There is definitely not a huge campus "atmosphere" if compared to Auburn and Alabama ... but USA is still a pretty big school and I would consider it half-commuter atomosphere and half true university atmosphere. The atmosphere is improving each year (and especially will once football is Div 1-A) ... but it's true that it still has a long ways to go if the destination is a true "big-university" feel. Still a great college and good atmosphere, imho.

Auburn was waay to big for my tastes when I went there years ago for a science event. I got lost several times. The size of USA, provided it doesn't get any bigger, is just right.

Correction : Use to be a commuter school and the 60`s style architecture is becoming a thing of the past. USA has over a dozen new buildings that are in construction phase or have been completed since 2005 and there are about 6 more that have renderings. The Atmosphere has made a complete 360 since the football program has arrived on Campus. The commuter feel will soon be in the history books!!

Nice campus. Not huge like the two main schools in the state, but still nice. Competent basketball team and football program will be going Division 1-A in 2015.

AU Tigers : 24,100

UAB Blazers : 18,047

I think you mean a 180.

I agree with oscott. The school doesn't quite have the same feeling as one of the major universities, but it is probably 50% closer than it was ten years ago. And I bet in the next ten years it will be there.

180 ? Well I wont argue with you on that but USA Fall of 08 feels like 360 compared to USA Fall of 09. Just within a year span the football program has done a lot to the school atmosphere. On the outside looking in it may seem 180 even though 360 is a big turn but i`ll say 270.

Becoming a Divison 1A school in 2013 would be our 360.

A 180 signifies a complete change. A 360 puts you back where you started and so there is no change. To say the campus atmosphere, sports, academics, etc. did a 360 suggests it is back to where it was.

USA is already Division 1A in all other sports. The football team will be 1A in 2013. And despite what some people say about academics being the most important thing, the exposure that a Div 1A football team brings is huge for enrollment and monetary gains.
