The porch has decreed a new thread.

Share your best finds at dumps, dumpsters, junkyards.

I grew up near a military base and found lots of old steel pots and other things I should not have picked up now that I am an adult and know better

That come quickly to mind are: A still-working table fan and a laptop computer. Several hand tools: screwdriver, chisel and knife sharpener.

My favorite is a 12 foot length of 3/8" welded link chain. It's gotta lotta miles on it, but seems to have plenty more left.

Ummm, let me see....... Oh yeah, I got bark/mulch for my yard and flower beds from the Kalispell dump. They chip up all trees/stumps brought in and sell it at rather cheap prices.
Not much chance to find anything at the C-Falls green boxes due to the "diver" crew that pretty much lives there.

We just found a nice three tiered frame for flower pots or something but we will adapt it into a retail window or counter display unit.
I'm a pack-rat and have no qualms about asking the dump attendant to borrow "The hook" to retrieve something useful.

One of my neighbors is dumpster diving all the time. Recently he found an older Brass Bed that someone had left in the trash for pickup. He asked the homeowner if it was OK for him to take it and got his approval. The owner had said he was tossing it because one of the cross frame tubes in the headboard had cracked. Dave brought it back to my garage and we put a magnet on it and found out it was all Brass not just Brass plating. We weighed it and it totaled 48 pounds. The local metal scrap yard is paying $1.98/pound so the scrap value alone makes it worth close to a $100. Another neighbor fired up his torch and gas welded it for him. With a few hours of elbow grease the bed looks like new. When he showed it to his wife she was one happy camper.

I have a standing agreement with Dave for treadmills. I give him $10 to $50 for every treadmill he finds. I salvage the belt mechanisms, motors and controllers and make large wood sanding machines from them. I have sold several of these for prices as high as $400.00. If I ever get a bigger garage I am planning on keeping one for my own use.

Wow, now that's the true spirit of recycling, reusing, repurposing!!

The Missoula newspaper "The Missoulian" has a classified section called "to give away".
I have seen so many nice pianos in there for free throughout the years. Lots of other really nice stuff is given away there too like good horses, trailers, washers and dryers etc.
Our county however has lots of frugal folks and very few useful items end up in our dumpsters.
