Hello and welcome to the forum, I did some searching here on CD and did not find too much.
Do you have a particular area that you are looking at?

Missoula has the university so there will be higher prices and some shortages.

I[Mod cut] The bitterroot is generally a nice place full of nice people, only problem is there are too many of them anymore. Housing is high priced and wages are generally low.

Any place in western Montana that is close to jobs and big shopping is going to be similar in that the prevailing wages just won't support good living unless you have a few outside dollars coming in that you don't need to work for.

Most of the people who live well in Montana either already had money or they work themselves to death. It's a bit tough on a working class newcomer unless you are used to struggling for peanuts.
Montana is a great place full of opportunities for the self reliant type who doesn't "expect to be offered a decent job"
Doctors and nurses are in great demand here though as they have trouble getting folks here to pay their bills.

I jokingly call Montana a "B.Y.O.J." state. Good luck to you. ~♥~

Lolo to Hamilton will put you in range of some of the best Elk hunting around.

For Montana, move there with 9 months rent if you can.

Montana is defintely a BYOJ state. There are very few jobs that pay a decent wage and the Bitterroot area has a high cost of living. Even traditionally high paying jobs pay less in this state.

Charles Schwab and David Letterman have something in common:

They both own homes in an exclusive gated community located in the Hamilton area. This should give you some idea of the expense of living there. Also, Missoula is the liberal hotspot of western MT, so be prepared for the smell of Patchouli and the fashion that is tie-dye and Birkinstocks. I liken Missoula to Eugene Oregon, but you've probably never been there either and I don't know Northern New England enough to compare to a town there. You wouldn't have to depart too far north or west from there to get away from the college town atmosphere though unless that's what you're seeking. Climatologically speaking, Missoula is nature's little vaccuum cleaner, sucking in all the surrounding dirty air and stewing in it until finally exhaling it to blow eastward again. Some of the dirtiest air in the entire Pacific NW lingers over and in Missoula for months at a time. I'd avoid it if I were you.
