there have been two homicides in billings lately. you can not get away from it any where. and dont let the no sales tax thing fool you. wait untill you register a new vehicle in Montana be ready to spend about 500 dollars per year. and montana has a pretty high income tax.. housing in billings is reasonable compared to farther west in Montana.. bozeman has the highest cost of housing from Seattle to milwaukee.. and an average income of 35.000 per year..

Like to confirm a couple things you said. It costs 500 for your annual license and registration. There must be a breakdown based on value, gross vehicle weight and slow depreciation annual on the amount you pay.

The tax burden doesnt seem bad, here in MN sales tax is 6.875%, Montana zero. Wish I would have waited, bought a new car last month.
The average state income tax in MN is 6.67% Montana is 4%.
I noticed the property taxes are much higher, I have a house in the woods, valued at 175,000 and the taxes are $1067. Looks like they are about double that in Billings.

Yes, people get murdered in Billings but they get killed in Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Missoula, Great Falls, Kalispell, Three Forks, ect. The overlooked thing is that when someone is murdered in Montana, it's going to be reported in every paper and on at least half the news stations in the state. That's how slow news days are.

@ Snowblind: The difference between your rural cabin and the home in Billings is likely going to be the amount of school funding and any special improvement district fees assessed to the home in Billings. The portion going to the State is likely higher on your rural cabin than the home in Billings if it is a vacation property and not in primary residence. Also, the only reason the average rate for Montana income tax is 4% is that most people in the state make less than 55k a year. If you are a professional (I'm a licensed engineer) and paid at market value, you'll pay 11%.

Only 11 states, have lower average income tax per person than Montana.

Montana 0% sales tax.

Total Tax Burden per capita, Montana 14th lowest.

Just found this older thread, I'm curious if you made the move to MT. and what your thoughts are vs. Northern MN.

Thanks!
