We are looking at relocating to MT and after some research both Missoula and Kalispell look appealing. Can I get some opinions on the personality of each town? Jobs and schools are not issues...

When you say jobs are not issues are you saying that you are bringing your job with you?

If jobs and schools are not issues, then perhaps the OP is retired.

At any rate, I have lived in both towns and each is in a really beautiful setting. The biggest difference IMHO is the political climate. Kalispell has become ultra right wing and the Flathead Valley attracts more than its share of Neo Nazis and people wishing to flaunt the government. Missoula is ultra left wing and never met a government project it didn't like to throw taxpayer money at.

Missoula is bigger so it has more shopping and restaurants. It's home to the University of Montana and so there is college-related activity such as football games, concerts, etc. Housing is ridiculously expensive. Kalispell has serious unemployment which has driven down the cost of housing somewhat.

Both are near many, many recreational opportunities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, skiing, and so on. I would highly recommend visiting western Montana to see what you think. Polson is also a nice little town. Montana's winters aren't for everyone; we've all known numerous people who have visited in the summer, loved it, moved here, and then left screaming after six months of winter. Good luck!

So, if you are afraid of becoming a Neo Nazi or a government-sucking liberal, move to Ronan. We are a "bump-in-the-road", right in the middle of Kalispell and Missoula geographically AND politically. Being in the center, we are objective about our politics. Primarily self-reliant, we expect the government to be there only when we need it, but not sitting on our face when we don't.

PS: One great cafe, one good restaurant, a few "drive through only if you need sustenance" places, and some spirited high school football.
