Hello everyone. I was wondering if I could get some info on Helena. There is a chance I get a transfer from TX to Helena with my work. My wife and I are a 35 and 36yrs old and Hispanic with no children. I was wondering if there is a lot of crime in Helena. Also any decent apartments (under $900)? I see Helena is about 30k which is great. We don't care for big cities. We hope that we end up in MT. We look forward to four seasons instead of two like we have down here in TX. We also suffer with lots of allergies down here so hopfully there is less of that up in MT. Any info is appreciated. Thanks and God Bless.

Welcome! Helena is a pretty calm place. Crime doesn't register as a concern on my mind since moving here a year and a half ago. There's been a couple of shootings here, bit usually it's domestic or rif-raff related. there always the run of the mill burglaries and things like that, but by and large it's a very calm town.

Don't know about rents per we, but you should be able to find something in that price range suitable.

Helena is a very pleasant small city. Not a lot going on downtown after 8pm, but tons of great outdoor recreation nearby and very little crime. The worst urban menace is the deer everywhere. Not much of a Hispanic community; in fact, you and your wife will just about double the population of that demographic. No matter, though, Montanans are very welcoming and so starved for cultural diversity that they will probably all want to hang out with you. If you like to explore backroads and far-flung wild areas, you'll love Helena. There are also a few lakes nearby, which is a rarity in MT. And you can get a really nice apartment for $900. Maybe even a small house. East Helena is even cheaper by not nearly as nice.

As for four seasons: Spring gets skipped some years because it often snows all through May and sometimes into June (with a few warm days in there to tease you), then suddenly it becomes warm, dry, and gorgeous. Winter is usually about 6-7 months long and COLD. Summers are amazing, and fall is short but sweet. First snow is usually in mid-October, then a nice Indian summer, then pretty much winter from November on. Gardening can be a stiff challenge. Actually, I'm basing this on Bozeman, but Helena is overall a bit warmer than that. Just a bit.

The best advice I can give is stay away from Helena Manor Apartments.

Thank you all for your time and responses...

I hope to hear something by the end of Nov. By any chance does Helena have an Extended Stay Hotel or something similar? If we move we propbably won't get an apt or rental house for about 2weeks. Then again I'm just guessing. Well I hope we get the oppurtunity to come to Montana. Again thanks for the responses. God Bless.

It is a bit of an adjustment. But you save a lot of money, as there is no place to go, nothing to do, and no place decent to go out to eat. A few places are in the "okay for Montana food" category. But it is a nice place. Good folks. Lots of bars and casinos, which surprised me.

You will need to buy snow tires, lots of winter clothes, and look forward to snow.

Montana doesn't have four seasons. We have two....Winter and Summer lol. Sometimes both in one day. Just last weekend, my husband and I went hunting on our horses. When we started, it was warm, creeks were running and no snow. By the time we got up the mountain, creeks were frozen, we were in over a foot of snow and had to put our winter gear on. We've also had days down below where the kids were out riding bikes in shorts in the morning and making snowmen in the afternoon.
