We are planning a trip to California this summer. Has anyone taken some or all of this trip with Amtrak? I wanted to know what it was like training it through the mountains, and what the views were like going down the coast (Ie do you get much ocean viewing?).

Any suggestions or tips about the trip. I know it will be a long haul, and unfortunately we can't afford a sleeper car.

Any info from those who have gone before would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Where are you getting on the train in MT? One of my biggest complaints is that the only depots are far north - up near the Canadian border. Would be nice if Amtrak would run the I-90 route through the major cities. We've done the Shelby to Seattle run a couple of times (once with a sleeper car and once without). Both rides were fine - bit boring, but that's to be expected.

Default Allegiant Air

I have looked into taking the train from Anaheim to Montana and back and found that it was even more expensive than flying not to mention it took two days each way. Have you ever looked into Allegiant Air? I have flown from Missoula to LA for as low as $49 each way. Check it out and see if that is less expensive for you. I think they fly to LA from Billings as well. Either way I hope you have a great time!
