I am taking stuff to try to cure my asthma now Arleigh. Not what the doctor prescribed though. I should start a thread on it over in health and wellness.

Maybe discussing Asthma or any lung conditions, That people think
were results from living in wildfire states, might prove interesting.
Asthma in general, is most likely a common discussion otherwise.

Thanks
It's a cold cruel world out there and we all do what we can to get by, such is life. No matter our opinions and difference we need to be respectfull and civil on a personal level.
It's no secret on here that I don't like people moving into the area for all the problems it creates, but note that I also have good friends who are new comers, meaning on a personal level, I take people for what they are, the good, the bad, the ugly, and treat them accordingly.

I mentioned once that I grew up fishing and camping
all over Western Wn. In the 60's I began to watch it dissappear.
In the 90's myself and others who remember it as I did, simply
could not believe how thoughrly Western WA, had changed.
There is no answer as long as we keep over growing as a species.
We control everthing else but ourselves! (my favorite expression)

I like it

I can relate to watching it all disappear....
I think this growth/sprawl thing though is just the way we do in America, we've always had this slash and burn to make a buck mentality. American keeps claiming what a great economy we have, but I beleive alot of it is based on the fact that we keep doing the growth/sprawl expand thing. Montana is a great example of that, there isn't really much new industry around here, the new industry is 'sprawl'.....
We (america) even had to put aside common sense in lending practices, (witness the current mortgage/credit/forclosure crisis) to keep it going, I think that shows the depths and extent that we as a country are willing to go to to keep growth/sprawl as part of our economy.....it's a pretty sad way to run a country. And the chickens do come home to roost. Some of those chickens are the degregation of our way or life here in Montana.
The other really sickening fact is that they are allowing the illegal aliens to flood in here by the millions in an effort to keep the growth/sprawl industry going, that is the dirtly little secret behind way they really won't stop it.
We could of had zero population growth in our country and not have to witness what is happening now. I don't even want to say what I think of our leaders who allow this to go on. Who would have ever thought they would allow such a thing, it is unbelievable to think they allow it to go on, unbeleivable. I put that at the root of all this, how beautifull place like Calif, WA, etc could still be, and people would be happy and content to still live there........what a shame it all is. In the end we have ourselves to blame, we were so happy to live a life of self indulgence that we lost our sense of reason and common sense, and bought into all the phoney crap our phoney leaders feed us and we kept electing them, instead of being able to see thru their crap, they knew they could tell us anything, and we'd fall for it. I guess we got the government we deserve, and now we are getting the land we deserve, filled with sprawl and malls filled with over-priced coffee and cheap crap for our shallow lives. And we wonder why the rest of the world looks at us the way they do.

I believe all you said is correct. My answer to the guestion, why, is simple
to me. Greed, envy, lust for power and warlike behavior. These traits are found almost exclusively in humans, and go back as far as history allows. I look for a ray of sunshine through the clouds, and that keeps me puttin along.

True in a sense, but another way to look at it is that they are the traits of the animal that still lives within us.......like animals we still have a desire to want and take what we see, and will impose are size and power on others to get it, in that respect humans have never really left the animal realm.
Some would argue that that is the nature of life, and if we want to live as animals and nature do then we should mimic them, but then one could argue that we are not as animals, but above them, and so we are better than nature. Which implies we have the right to use it as we see fit, so then we ruin it just like any animal would do, competely unaware and blinded by self motivation......we are all animals some are just better behaved than others, either by born temperment, reasoned behavior or the grace of god - pick your preference.
But wasn't this thread about affordable housing ?
I think the housing market here in Montana is finally turning the corner - it will be interesting to see what if any and what changes that will bring to the market and economy of our state. Looking back at the 80s it is hard to imagine that western montana, particuarlly the housing market was so depressed back than. Who would have ever thought it would turn to what it is today - so one never knows what the future holds. So as they say - "Keep you powder dry" The new montana dream is - "Affordable housing" - still just a dream but.... The old montana dream turned into a nightmare sometime ago when affordable housing flew out the window so to say.
For anyone who didn't witness the 80s in western montana, it might not have been the Great Depression - but it sure was giving a damn good inpersonation of it. People literlly walking away from their homes, load the truck and leave, empty store fronts and buildings all along the downtown streets. As one person once said - "you coulda' shot a cannon off on main street in the middle of summer and no one woulda' known the difference or cared." And right previous to that time period was a growth/building spurt, does history repeat itself ? As much as I'd like to see things stop growing around here, looking back at the 80s, the words "be carefull what you wish for" - start to echo in my head. I often think we have a very fragile economy here, and much of it based on growth, if it stops, the whole ecomomy could start falling in on itself. It's done it before, ah but that couldn't happen again - just wishfull thinking on my part. And I never get what I wish for....so you are all safe for now. And affordable house will continue to be - yes! the new montana dream
