Years ago when I lived in Montana a friend took me to this abandoned military structure somewhere out on the plains north of Choteau. I was able to find a pic of it on the internet; the person who took it says that it is south of Shelby. I have never been able to find it since.

It's a one storey building, bunker-like with large doors (like for big vehicles), but the doors were obviously never installed. Stairs going up to a second storey that was only partially finished. Stairs going down to ???, filled in so you can't get down there. Walls about 4-5 feet thick, with a lot of rebar. When I was there, there was a lot of graffitti, trash, cliff swallows, burned coyote skeletons inside, etc. It was obviously being used by local youth as a party site. As I recall we drove right up to it, no fences or anything, and right off the road.

Anyone know what I am talking about, and where it is? This has been bugging me for about 20 years, I figure, I might as well ask - someone might know.

Are you talking about this? Abandoned Air Force Site | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/montanatom1950/3609863946/in/photostream/ - broken link)

I don't know anything about it, but found this pic on the internet. Figured it might bring up somebody's memory that saw it at one time.

Safeguard Montana Complex (Malmstrom AFB)

Here's everything you need to know about the past of this interesting, confusing, and downright tantalizing piece of Montana history...I got curious about this place the first time I drove by it, and I have done a lot of reading about it. Very, very interesting facts and stats about this place in the middle of nowhere.

Another interesting fact about the "fortress" as my kids jokingly call it is that the walls facing Russia are at such an angle that they would "deflect" a missle straight up. My family has done extensive research on the building after seeing it on a hunting trip. It is now tradition to drive inside and eat our lunches from the "fortress". Sad that it's a local kids partying joint. It is massive and amazing. When you are driving towards it, you can see that there is something that doesn't belong in the middle of nowhere and all of the sudden you are upon it and it's size takes your breath away. One other thing is that it has been for sale in the past (well, the land it sits on). Whoever bought it is sitting on a goldmine as there are numerous massive generators underground beneath it that were buried when the building was abandoned.

It's exactly 48"17'15.43°N, 111"20'31.97°W at an elevation of 3300 ft.

Pond on the East side of the road, this building is on the west side of the road. It's just north of the Ledger Road.

<pricking ears> Pond??

I'm movin' right in!!

Stupid Google maps put me in Mexico, Cancun to be exact. <beats on it> Well, now I'm between Selma and Bootlegger, due north of Great Falls and due east of Conrad. But I still don't see it.

I do see some interesting harvest patterns, you couldn't have laid 'em out straighter with a laser sight. Wonder if the farmers realise the scale of the artwork they've created?
