Those gateway towns like Livingston, Gardiner, Cooke City, and West Yellowstone are also going to promote it seeing as how it's their lifeblood. While it may be mostly in Wyoming I think all three states have just as much right to claim it.
Yeah, it is not like Montana is making any false representation. It us something the states have in common.

That's not how it works and what the poster was saying. The Dallas Cowboys play their games in Arlington, the both New York teams play in New Jersey, it's that sort of thing.

I am aware that there are three entrances in Montana, and (1?) in Idaho. 2 in Wyoming.

So the question is as it is written. Why does Montana claim Yellowstone? Why do travel brochures for Montana claim 2 national parks instead of 1? What's the story?
There are actually seven vehicle entrances to the park. The north and west entrances are from towns in Montana. The northeast entrance leads to Silvergate and Cooke City, MT, then the highway splits and you can be in either Wyoming or continue up to Montana's Beartooth Highway a short distance afterwards. The east entrance leads to Cody, WY and the south entrance leads to Wyoming's Grand Teton NP. The Bechler entrance and the Cave Falls entrance both skirt the Wyoming/Idaho line and only travel a short distance into the park before making dead-ends at backcountry portals.

For many many years the north and west entrances were the main entry portals into the park, from Montana, due to train service to West Yellowstone, MT and Gardiner, MT. The northeast entrance wasn't ever really used for visitation until the modern era, it was a mining road through the park to access rich mining deposits in the mountains above those towns. The east entrance opened fairly early but took many years to become popular, after automobiles improved.
