I still think the world would be better without cell phones.

Cell service is terrain and location dependant. If you are near a sizable town you will be good. Anything along a major road is usually good too. Dead spots are all over though.

hey i am also stationed at malmstrom so i thought i would give you my thoughts. i have alltel, which i hate... i would go with verison. the prices are better and the phones are much better. everyone i know with alltel seems to hate it. being from texas i had tmobile and loved it but up here that doesnt work and sprint as far as i know works sometimes but you might just want to see how it works for you when you get here. also you should be able to get out of your contract because they have no towers here i know thats how i got out of my contract without paying anything. hope you enjoy malmstrom.

Satellite phones are more expensive but offer security if you are traveling in adverse weather and experience an emergency. Globalstar has issues with their satellites, but Iridium has excellent coverage. People pay a lot of money to "accessorize" their vehicles, but a sat phone gives peace of mind when hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, or just driving in sparsely populated areas.

Satellite phone brings peace of mind when recreating? Boy, I always thought a thirty-aught-six brought piece of mind when in the woods.

That .06 certainly offers a certain piece of mind. If I hike ten miles into the wilderness to go fishing and break my ankle the .06 offers little use to get my a$$ out of there. There are also simple GPS tracking devices to help others find you in case of an emergency.
