Well Butte did have a reputation years back as a pretty rough town, maybe it still can be.
Helena is a nice area, the place really is safe and the people here are very friendly. Montana will not suit people who like the big city life but for those who like a slower pace and dont mind driving long distances this is a pretty great place.

Heyoo , i use to live in a small town of 300 for a few years drove 50m one way to work, never locked my house, it was always open, never locked cars, never worried about anything.
The big cities well if you can call them that.. I laugh at people that call Hellena and missoula big cities.. but ayway... i'd lock them, mainly because the tweekers and kids, but you get out in the smaller towns... crime is not a issue...
I think the main reason crime is so low here is everyone has guns of some sort, and people that try to break in and rob a place know that...

I've never felt such love-hate for a place in my life! Just can't say enough about the dichotomy of feelings that develop over 38 years for a place so beautiful yet so cruel. Missoula's kind side is often overwhelmed with profiteers - hardly a good employer around, horrible wages and 400 applicants for each job. The schools are good but bullying is endemic at the grade school level. The University of Montana is a joke/ party school/ date rape center. If you're over 50, forget even getting a job. There are so many opportunities to go out and enjoy nature yet poverty keeps you stranded in sub-standard housing. Worked my way from housekeeping to Health Unit Coordinator over five years in a hospital only to be fired unfairly; it devastated me. Be aware that the price you pay to live here may be way too high for most people. This town wants to be another yuppified Boulder, CO without the land protections. The squeeze you feel in the rest of the nation is a bona fide recession here and the suicide rate reflects it. The few unique and beautiful angles to Missoula are its artistic and musical sides (we get awesome concerts) and its abundance of truly original characters. Be prepared to be very, very lonely if you don't drink alcohol. Growing seasons are short but sunny and can be extended by various methods - lots of organic gardeners and a great farmer's market (huge). Last but not least, Missoula is dog heaven! People live for their dogs here and it makes me smile ear to ear. Ask me more if you need...

Several talk about how the wages are so low in Montana. If you adjust for cost of living, you find that in the Western and Mountain states, that only Wyoming, Washington and Colorado beat out Montana. We are ahead of powerhouse states like California. See second chart for the adjusted median incomes show you the real truth. It is not how big the paycheck is, but what you can buy with it.
