Whitefish Pilot reported 8/7/08 that "43 trains passed through the city every day in 2006." At that time the city made a study on how to create "quiet zones" to comply with a 2000 federal ruling. NOW do horns sound only in emergencies in Whitefish???

I have never lived in Whitefish but the tracks there carry both freight trains as well as Amtrak. Where ever there are trains there is going to be some noise. I think the engineer is required to sound the horn while approaching crossings and while passing through towns. They don't do that every time though. I live about a short block from a freight line here in Conrad and many trains just rumble on through without blowing the horn so maybe someone will come on and give you more info than I have about the train noise in Whitefish.

The train station is just north of downtown Whitefish. We used to live a few blocks east of downtown and maybe a half mile south of the tracks. We could hear the screeching of the train coming to a stop, but the horns sounded far off as the only crossing was west of town near a campground.
