Will be visiting Montana this fall and I would like to see the Rocky Mountains. What would be the best town to stay, to get to the Rockies soon?

There are a lot of separate mountain ranges in western Montana that comprise Montana's portion of what is called the Rocky Mountains. There isn't any one town you can base out of to see much of the mountains here. You would need to stay in many different towns to really see a lot of our mountain ranges. When you get here you'll soon discover how vast and huge Montana is and how different the various mountain ranges that comprise the Rocky mountains really are. Much like the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California the eastern front of Montana's part of the Rockies are steep escarpments while many of the ranges of the western side of the Rockies do have steep jagged ridge-lines there are a lot of smoother and more rolling type of mountains. Big difference is that the Sierras are one range and the Rockies are rows of ranges with mountain valley basins between.

Here is a photo of the front just south of Glacier National Park.

Here is a mountain pocket lake in the Cabinet range not very far from the Idaho State line.

Much of the western slopes look a lot like this photo below. The yellowish trees are not dead or dying they are Western Larch and the needles turn and fall off on the Fall.

If you visit Glacier National Park, check out the Going-To-The-Sun Road. If you're in the southwest part of the state, take a run over the Beartooth Pass out of Red Lodge. Both will afford you magnificent views and the opportunity to park your car and hike. If you don't care to hike, both have numerous pulloffs to get out and take in the views. Both, however, can see early winter conditions starting in September so have a backup plan in case they get snowed shut.

Some trails in Glacier have limits on numbers of people at any one time, trails off the Beartooth are pretty much wide open. Both are high altitude, esp. the Beartooth (right around 10,000') so have your lungs ready.

Rickers is right, there's a lot of area to consider here. What you see depends on how much time you have to stay.

Pic is off the Beartooth Pass Hiway.

Just about any town you stay in, you will already be in the Rockies. Now we just need to find out from you, what you want to do. Sight see? Hike? Fish? Camp? See some of the attractions such as lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, etc?

Do you want to stay in several towns? What will be your length of stay in Montana?

Here is a small lake you can drive to, way up in the Bitterroot Range. There are a few like this and some are accessed by very rough roads some you need to hike to.
The second pic is of a Timber Wolf stalking a small young Grizzly Bear. Both are found in the Mountains of Western Montana along with Lions so be careful when hiking in the back country.

That looks very much like a coyote to me, pointy nose and all; but whatever, it's a great photo!

You could be right or it could be a hybrid. I was told it was a timber wolf.
Coyotes can be pretty bold. A woman in Nova Scotia recently was attacked and killed by two coyotes while she was hiking.
