I've been reading posts from Santa Cruz, and the gang and homeless problems seem to come up regularly. I'm not considering a move to Santa Cruz, but it makes me wonder about the goings on in the Monterey area (where I am considering a move). Don't get me wrong, I currently live in Philly and don't have my head in the clouds about the gang/homeless problems. I don't expect Monterey to be without its share of difficulties, just don't want to live with the same types of things i currently see in Philly. Thanks for any input.

I've live here with my family for ~ 5 years and have never has any issues with gangs. That's not to say that crime doesn't happen. But that goes for anywhere. Now if you decide to live in Seaside, Marina, Salinas, etc... you could potentially see more gang related problems. But I know good people who live in these areas as well. Its not like everyone is gang banger walking around the streets or anything.

Yes, there are homeless also like anywhere. Well, probably more here than the colder states simply because they freeze to death more easily there. But they are not typically harassing people or anything. Yeah, there's guys at some freeway onramps or corners with cardboard signs, again nothing unusual. I do notice this more in certain parts of Santa Cruz.

Well, I'm in Fresno and know of gangs and crime. Not lived in Santa Cruz but have visited there for years. I'm very comfortable over there anywhere I go really. As your from Philly it shouldn't be anywhere near that.

I would say it's a HUGE cut above given my time there over the years.

No cheese steaks but oh, the calimari!

There is no part of Monterrey County that is similar to inner Philadelphia. Not even Salinas, which I believe has the highest crime rate in the county. It's much quieter.

I knew it wasn't on the level of Philly (where I taught in the inner city schools for many a moon), just wanted to get a feel.

I'd say anything out there is a cut above what you get in Chula Vista, where you can buy a house with a permanent resident inside!

Welcome to California!

Of course not everybody walking around the streets is a gang banger but spend enough time in Salinas on the weekend or after 3 on weekdays and you'll be scanning your surroundings constantly, locking your car doors at stop lights, and have your keys sticking out of your clenched fist while getting to your car in a parking lot.

Monterey has some questionable parts, and petty crime is on the increase, but overall it's a relatively safe place to live.

Good luck in your move, OP.
