I would never in a million years call Salinas charming. Maybe a long, long time ago it was.
Monterey charming? Some parts. Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove---absolutely. Salinas? Unless you can get into a very nice home in Prunedale or a home in Las Palmas or Toro Park (not charming at all-just better neighborhoods) then stay far away.

There is crime in the city, but most of the truly serious violence occurs on the East side (which I went to maybe a half dozen times over the years). Made some great friends there and would consider moving back... if I could afford to buy a home there.
