I would never in a million years call Salinas charming. Maybe a long, long time ago it was.

Monterey charming? Some parts. Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove---absolutely. Salinas? Unless you can get into a very nice home in Prunedale or a home in Las Palmas or Toro Park (not charming at all-just better neighborhoods) then stay far away.
