I am moving to SC in Aug and am trying to aviod having to work in San Jose and or do the 17 everyday. I found some good offers in Salinas but am not sure of the commute. Im from LA so I am used to commuting about an one hour daily. Any advice from anyone who lives in the area..anything will be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Used to live there and did that commute. It beats 17 as it is not winding. It took me about 50 mins-hour each day, but I lived on westside of SC. If you're coming from eastside, it's probably better. However, during the tourist season, the afternoon commute back to SC was HORRID. Oftentimes 1:30 to 1:45 hours. It was worth it for three years, but then I couldn't take it anymore. Driving to SJ is incredibly horrible.

Getting out of SC shouldn't be a problem but yeah getting back in would be.

Don't live in Santa Cruz if you're working in Salinas would be my advice. South Salinas is a decent area and you won't waste an 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day on the road.

I'd rather do that drive than have to drive Hwy 17 into San Jose. That said traffic can be pretty backed up and bottle necked at certain choke points during rush hour. SC has nasty traffic in and of itself during rush hour. I'm from LA also and I've been stuck doing that drive during rush hour. While its not LA traffic it's still very slow and long stop and go. There are just too many cars for the small roads and limited infrastructure during that time. The time of day really matters the most. Maybe you can arrange off peak hours with your employer leaving later/earlier than the throng of ppl during rush hour. When off peak hours its not that bad of a drive at all.

Best option is to live closer. Next best option is to drive off peak hours.
