I've never been! Is it worth a day?

I would say yes if you've never been before. Since I've gone so many times I only go when bringing visitors now. Personally, I prefer to go paddelboarding or hiking Big Sur which I never tire off.

Yes - it's not just about the history of Cannery Row and the marine life there, but also about conservation and sustainability.

The site of the aquarium is Cannery Row - built upon the sardine fishing industry and processing - which closed due to overfishing/depletion of the stocks. They do hand out little cards about what sort of seafood you can eat and those which you shouldn't (due to overfishing).

Yes! It's expensive, but definitely worth going to, in my opinion. If you have AAA, you can get discounted tickets.

Then, you can walk on the beach and eat at the wharf. The only restaurant I'd warn you against eating at, is El Torito. Fantastic view, consistently terrible food and service. If you only want good margaritas with a view, it's great. Or maybe just some guacamole at a table in the bar with a view of the ocean. Otherwise, no matter how many chances I gave them, they were always really terrible.

It is worth a day definitely. I don't go often as I have been many times as someone else said mainly when i have guests. But they always love it and want to go back especially kids. I wouldn't miss it. You can often get free or reduced priced tickets on Craigslist. Or several hotels and airbnb properties have tickets.

Absolutely! The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of my favorite spots. And it's a great base from which to explore the incredible Monterey region.

Is it worth going to with 4-year-olds? They're not into reading about the history of Cannery Row, but they like watching fishies swim and pushing buttons on interactive displays or doing preschooler-type interactive activities.

What other things are good to do in Monterey with children this age?

Yes, kids love the aquarium. Will they remember going at the age of 4 once older? Don't really know. Its kinda like going to Disneyland with a very young child. There's a lot of stuff they simply won't remember. But its still fun at the time.

There is so much else to do with kids here. But most of it has to do with exploring nature like tide pools. Point Lobos is great for this near Weston Beach. Go for a hike. Take 'em to Garrapata to see the redwoods and coast. Go to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History which is free! Check out the wharf area. Get some good seafood, clam chowder, etc... Rent paddleboards or kayaks and take 'em out on the water near Lovers Point or the wharf. Take them to the Carmel River and get in the water. Go visit Big Sur Pfeiffer Beach, etc...
