I've taken a few business trips to Monterey this winter and managed to get out into nature. I always look forward to this part of the trips.

Wow, imagine walking the dog on the hiking trail in that third photo. Looks very serene and relaxing up in the hills with the ocean view. Very stunning

Those are some beautiful shots! What camera and lens do you have?

I know those spots, but my camera doesn't take pix that look like those!

I see a lack of sharpness and edge detail. Are you using a tripod?

"Winter in Monterey" is pretty much a joke compared to winter anywhere else.

How is winter where you moved?

Winter in Monterey is often nicer than most days in the late spring or summer. In winter, if there is high pressure sitting around for a week or so, it can be mostly sunny with a light ocean breeze. The storms that hit off and on November to April usually drop plenty of rain and turn the vegetation and hills green. That looks much better than the dry brown hills in summer and fall. In summer, heavy fog will often sit along the coastline in the morning hours, often not burning off till the afternoon. It looks dreary and feels damp, especially with wind coming off the cool ocean surface.

Thanks, on that trip I was using a Fuji XT30 and a little 23mm pancake prime. This is a great travel kit and fits nicely into carry bags. Very small and light weight.

Yes, winter in Monterey is just about perfect in terms of a mild climate. That is if you don't like much rain. Summers are colder most of the time with the fog and wind. Its opposite most other places. But its a climate that is easy to adapt to if you love the sea which we do.

Winters in the PNW are definitely colder and summers are warmer and generally nicer with plenty of warm summer nights near the lakes and rivers. Spring and Fall are pretty similar. Though the fall colors of the PNW blow away anything we had experienced while living in CA. And spring is way more green - more shades of green than I've seen anywhere. Kauai was probably second. Yes, winter is harder with far less sun and plenty of rain. Though we had heard so many stories about how the sun shines so little in the PNW that we were actually pleasantly surprised. I guess we had low expectations after hearing all the stories. From my perspective, 9 months out the year it's glorious weather. And winter provides the moisture the other 9 months need to keep things really healthy and green.

I actually created a thread about one of the great myths of the PNW. That is, that you won't see the sun most of the year. I documented almost the entire past year showing evidence that dispels the myth which is really just exaggeration. You can see it here, if interested:

You won't see the sun for 10 months out of the year they said...

23mm on that camera is about equivalent to 35mm on full-frame? "Moderate-wide"?
