Salinas isn't all that bad, you just need to know what areas to avoid (just like any other city in America!) Don't consider it out of the question without at least looking around. Want to know which areas to avoid? Just ask/look around.

Some nicer neighborhoods/communities have gone up in the past 5-6 years and as far as the gang problems go... I have been living here for the past 20 years and have only been shot once... JUST KIDDING!

Nope, never been shot or beat up or seen any of those things even happen while I'm around.

Haven't been in Salinas now for about 17yrs. When I left we had lived in the downtown area for about three years and enjoyed every day of it. Nicer weather than Monterey (where we moved out of), less tourists, easier parking, more "affordable" shopping etc. And there are some very nice homes there in the dt area. Only wish we'd bought one of them that was for sale behind the High School. I think it was some overpriced victorian for about $116k...lol!

I have heard there are some pretty nice parts of south Salinas. And it looks like there are some really nice developments along the 68 between Monterey and Salinas. Though most of that looks like country club type private communities.

Yes there is nice developments all along 68,quite the nice area to live if you can aford it.The weather is fantastic.Dont forget Toro Park.It becomes confusing because alot of those areas have Salinas addresses but for someone looking from afar, and you read on City Data to stay away from Salinas in general then one becomes very confused.

Yes, I agree. It is kind of like guilt by association. There is 'so' much bad press here 'with homicide statistics' about Salinas and gangs that most folks who don't know the area as well like myself just tend to want to stay away completely. I found the same thing to be true of the Castroville area. There are some really nice homes in Oak Hills for example. But who would have thought really nice home and Castroville would be combined in the same sentence.

Agreed with Oak Hills,if we did not move south, we actually had a contract for a house in Oak Hills.Nice homes, spacious lots. The traffic is a bit of a bear on 101 but you just have to know when to get around it.A nice choice in my book

I may also be considering taking a job with the Fleet Numerical Meterological and Oceanography Center in Monterey and with my starting salary, even rent will be a bit on the high side. I am going through the process so not sure if I have a job there or not yet, but just looking around in case I do end up moving out there. I currently live in Lansing,MI where rent and home prices are a bit cheaper, like 600-700/month vs. 800-1100 for places out there for renting at least. I did do some research on Salinas, and it doesn't look all that bad at all. Every town has its nice and not so nice parts. So I am not really all to worried about that for now. Owning a home, may take a good amount longer to accomplish than I would like, but seems the quality of life at least living amongst some of the most beautiful scenery and most comfortable weather in the country seems appealing. Cold, snowy, and cloudy winters have gotten old. Looks to be alot of good info here to look at. Even with a depressed market for homes, still quite a bit expensive, although trolling through the real estate I have found online, there does look to be some decent deals out there.
