Janette Bertrand - never heard of her, had to Google. Hardly "famous to the world / nationally".

On the world stage I'd go with Trudeau, Mulroney, Conrad Black, Christopher Plummer, William Shatner, and in certain circles Joe Weider, the Bronfmans, Mordecai Richler and Henry Morgentaler (my family doctor back in the '60s!).

Unless it's a sports star or singer I doubt any others have name recognition outside Canada.

People should remember that there are many "worlds", not just one.

Now, Janette Bertrand is a big star in Quebec - though she is not necessarily bigger than a host of others I can name off the top of my head like Julie Snyder, Michel Jasmin, Gregory Charles, Véronique Cloutier, Sonia Benezra, Patrice Lécuyer, etc. Perhaps the poster is simply a fan of Mme Bertrand...

As for the names cited above, there are probably a lot of Montrealers who do not know quite a few of these names.

On the other hand, there are many Montrealers like Robert Charlebois who are huge stars and household names in the French-speaking world far beyond the borders of Quebec.

At the moment, as far as worldwide recognition goes the most famous Montrealer in the world is probably Céline Dion by a longshot. She may be even be the most famous Canadian, though this might be debatable I realize.

Is she a Montrealer or a Quebecker?

Both. She is as much a Montrealer as Frank Sinatra was a New Yorker. Technically she is from Charlemagne, a small suburb that is about 500 m from the Montreal city limits.

Everyone in Quebec considers Céline to be "from Montreal".

She does have a huge gated home in the northern part of Montreal, its on a small island.
