My dad was a member of a zydeco band (Clifton Chenier) up until he needed to start making real money to provide for his family. He spoke Cajun/creole french and didn't learn English til he started working at a young age of 14, I think.
Ironically, it was German immigrants to Louisiana who introduced the accordion that black "Creoles" came to use in La La (the precursor to Zydeco) music.
The Germans brought the accordion, tuba and euphonium to Mexico/Texas -it influenced several genres of music such as Norteno - and Conjunto which I also like in addition to Zydeco..
