The healthcare component of our local economy is growing rapidly. That is being brought about primarily by three things. First, although Morgantown is a very "young" city in terms of average age of residents, the State of West Virginia does not fit that category. An aging population needs more healthcare and with relatively easy access due to Interstate travel they seek the best available, which in most cases is in Morgantown. Secondly, the Mon Fayette Expressway has opened an entirely new market for our local healthcare system. Thousands of people now seek care here rather than elsewhere because it is high quality care, and it is more accessable than the alternatives. In addition, there are many new residents in our area who are "off the radar" so to speak. Oil and gas workers are in northern West Virginia by the thousands, living in trailers, motels, and campsites. Those people and their families need healthcare too.
All of these issues, plus a growing local population, place stress on existing facilities and workforces. The system is simply rising to meet the demand. They will be building a new, 10 story facility on the Health Sciences campus during the next 3 years resulting in the hiring of hundreds of additional personnel.
