Hi, sorry if this type of thing has been asked a million times. This is also my first time posting here, so I hope it's the right place.

Anyway, my husband has a job opportunity that is looking pretty serious in Smithfield, PA. It's been recommended that we live in Morgantown instead, and I was just wondering what type of place it is. We have two kids with another on the way, and it looks like a big college town, but is it a family-friendly city as well? How is cost of living, crime, etc? What types of things are there to do there? I guess just basically, what information you would give a newcomer.

I know that's asking for a lot of information, but I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect. I've never been there, or anywhere in WV, but from what I can see online in pictures it's beautiful.

OH also, our younger son has Down syndrome. Are there good resources there for disabilities, i.e. different therapies and specialists, things like that?

Welcome. Our city is a University city, but it is family friendly too. We have our area's best medical resources, an outstanding array of arts offerings, concerts, and plays, diverse and interesting places to live, awesome outdoor venues literally out our back door, and relative proximity to Smithfield, PA. Our crime rate is among the lowest in the Nation... it is virtually non existent, and our robust economy is leading the way to impressive growth and good job opportunities.

Schools here are very good, as you can imagine with a system located in a University city. Our local high school has produced a couple Rhodes Scholars, in fact. Be sure to come and look us over.

Bear in mind that taxes in WV are must cheaper than in PA, so you'll likely save in the long run buying in Mon County. You might want to start looking at places that are in the Cheat Elem. school district (if that's the right age for your kids), since that's closest to where your husband will be commuting.

Things to do: enjoy the many locally owned restaurants, catch concerts and lectures from folks brought in by the University, take time at the local parks and outdoors attractions, go to some WVU sporting events... Morgantown has lots to do for a city of its size, but there's always a short ride to Pittsburgh if you require the regular symphony orchestra performance and pro sports.

Good luck with your search and feel free to ask here for help.

Thank you both! I'm very nervous about the move, mainly because I've never been there and we will know no one in the area. We're hoping to come up there next month to start trying to find a place to live, with October being the move date.

Other question I forgot to ask: what is the weather like? We're from Florida, and in North Carolina right now. NC kinda sorta has four seasons, with the occasional light snowfall in winter, but for the most part it doesn't get that cold here. Since we'll be moving there in the wintertime I'm just curious if we'll need to get heavier clothes beforehand or if winters aren't all that bad.

The Morgantown area can certainly have a winter, so make sure you have sweaters and coats ahead of time. Snowfall right in town and to the west generally have only moderate snows. However to the east, snows can get larger. Morgantown (and Smithfield for hat matter) are basically at the base of the westernmost ridge of the Appalachian mountains. Don't worry about the snow though. Make sure your cars have good snow tires on hem in the winter months and you'll be fine.

For the rest of the year's weather, Morgantown is really a blend of climates. We get the southern heat. Several times it was warmer here than at my mother's near Gainsville, FL. We can be impacted from nor'easters that you'd expect in Boston or New York. Sometimes we're more like the Midwest. Really, our weather is much like our culture. A blend of several regions.

I hope you enjoy our city! We look forward to Gavin you.

Morgantown has the highest quality of life in WV and has been consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States. The economy is also one of the best in the country. The city is great for anyone from students to families, from young to old, from white to black, from educated to uneducated, etc. Crime is very low.

Here is a list of the awards Morgantown has one. No other city in WV, and the vast majority in the country dont even come close to this. Simple put Morgantown isnt a good place to live it is a GREAT place to live.

My wife and I have a condo in Pensacola, but live in Morgantown most of the time. I fully agree with what you're saying. I worked for years in the NYC area and my wife is a New York native. We retired to Morgantown and she loves it as much as I do. We have most of the amenities of a large city without most of the negatives. The great outdoors nearby is a major bonus.

As a person newly moving here, these folks should get in touch with the Morgantown Newcomers Club, which will fill them in on a lot of what goes on and give them a chance to meet some folks. http://www.morgantownnewcomers.com/
