Michael Garcia of Fairmont has been elected the 63rd. Mountaineer at WVU. He will officially begin his extensive duties at the annual Blue - Gold Spring Football Game benefitting the WVU Childrens Hospital.
I would prefer to see a female in this role. I feel like the last female received a "hard time" from some of the less savory elements of the WVU population... and the school should move to rectify that embarrassing episode by embracing a new female Mountaineer.
If they're the best candidate, then I'm all for it (even though admittedly I do prefer my mascot to come with a beard). Durst did get a hard time, but some of that was in response to some of her actions "away from the musket," as it were. She wasn't awful as a mascot, but she paled in comparison to people like Brock, for instance.
I was too young to know how Tennant did, but from most accounts she did a pretty good job.
I think it should be the best person for the job. I am not into affirmative action (itself a form of discrimination) or political correctness (ignoring the truth or rewriting history because somebody might choose to be offended by it). Both are failed concepts. If the best person is a female, fine. But if the mascot were Rosie the Riveter it would be hard for a male to fit that role too.
