And another fight with shots fired..... What is going on here? It seems like everyday there is another armed robbery near campus. I know some on here says the crime rate is low, and it may be, but living here for 30 years, I just don't remember these type of things happening so frequently.

From WAJR

Shots fired in Morgantown

A Beckley man has been charged with a shooting on Stewart Street in Morgantown. Omar Barghouthi, 20, was arrested early yesterday evening. Police say he got into an altercation with another man and pulled a handgun, firing one shot. Police tracked him down around 9:45 Wednesday night and charged him with a count of wanton endangerment.

Every place is worse behavior wise than it was in the 90s due to drugs, but it isn't nearly as bad here as most other developed areas. It is the same small group of people trying to exploit the presence of 30,000 young people. The guy from Beckley was caught so he won't be a problem any longer. The strong armed robber will be caught too.

So I'm assuming everyone is forgetting the dark era of Morgantown under Reagan? Morgantown was probably the most depressed area you could think of during the 80's. I do believe there are still quite a few unsolved murders from the time. Sunnyside was the last vestage of what Morgantown as a whole was like. Thank god for the renaissance we have had.

Don't you think it is a bit of a stretch to attribute the behavior of a few morons in the 80s to Reagan, just as it would be a stretch to do that now with a few morons to Obama? What in the world does a President have to do with it?

Heavy industry was taking a major hit everywhere in West Virginia before Reagan came along. It was no different in Morgantown with Sterling Faucet closing as jobs moved to cheap labor countries. The only difference is Morgantown was not as dependent on heavy industry, so the effects were not felt to the same degree. The same could be said for Charleston since there were a lot of government jobs there.

The city needs to get a handle on the downtown nightlife. We have such a vibrant and busy downtown, but things need to be done to make it safer. It is beginning to get a reputation of a dangerous place. There was an article in the DA after the murder at Bent Willeys two weeks ago. Several students were quoted as saying they avoid downtown because of the non-students that travel here to mingle with the college crowd. Morgantown has really changed.

It isn't the nightlife that needs a handle. It is some of the people who come here hoping to sell drugs. For some reason, Morgantown doesn't station a beat cop on high street during late hours. They are all out sitting in cruisers looking for speeders. It is a no brainer that High Street needs a beat cop walking up and down the street, and that bar owners need to alert that cop at the first sign of trouble.

Every place is worse behavior wise than the 90s? Uhh, not according to crime statistics. Most places have seen a precipitous drop in violent crime since the 90s. NYC went from almost 2000 murders a year to a around 400. DC went from 400 a year to less than a hundred last year.
