It might affect as many as 40 well paid workers. Unfortunately, the expansions at Longview are years away and won't be in time for them to get jobs there.

Talking about two different things. Workers at the the plant were told that most of them will be let go. Not talking general economic trends here, just this specific place and its workers.

They won't use coal anymore because the gas auxiliary is sufficient for steam generation.

I believe their coal is delivered by barge.

There have been some rumors of a buyer for the plant, which could change the dynamics there. Time will tell. Even if they stop using coal in January, the facility maintains the ability to once again use it if market conditions change and coal become cheaper.
