West Virginia No. 14 Nationally in Directors’ Cup

With 13 NCAA championships completed, West Virginia University is currently No. 14 overall nationally and first in the BIG EAST Conference in the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.

After the fall seasons were completed, the Mountaineers compiled 174 points, sitting No. 4 in the BIG EAST and No. 25 overall. Then during the winter, WVU added 193.50 points to accumulate a total of 367.50 points thus far. WVU’s rifle team finished No. 3 nationally to post 85 points, women’s track & field finished No. 10 nationally to add 66 points, women’s swimming added 16 points and wrestling 26.5 points.

Rounding out the Top 5 in the BIG EAST were Villanova (20), Notre Dame (42), Louisville (47) and Connecticut (49). Stanford stands in first with 559 points, followed by Florida (548), Penn State (521.50), Virginia (518) and Minnesota (487.75).

Two years ago, West Virginia finished with a school-best 30th place finish in the Directors’ Cup standings. Last year, WVU finished in 50th place. The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
