Honestly? Because this house is a flippin' money pit! If it becomes apparent it's not selling anytime this decade, that's what we'll probably do.

Whether you buy or rent, the school district boundary is the same. I don't understand your logic there.

I do understand why you have always bought previously, but we've been in the same situation having been relocated before our house sold in a really bad market and it was really stressful, and expensive. It's been almost 4 years and I'm still not ready to buy again, partly in case we do get moved again. Glad to hear you've decided to rent!
