Same here. Multiple mortgages in multiple states over a 35+ year period and I never had an escrow issue.

They may not require it, but some do charge for not doing it. IIRC, most of the lenders I dealt with charged an extra 1/8 point on conventional loans if you did not agree to having taxes and insurance escrowed. And putting 20%+ down didn't matter.
