Motorcyclist hit by lightning in stormy end-of-week weather | Local News | The Seattle Times

A motorcyclist riding on I-5 in Washington state was hit by lightening. Amazingly, he didn't go down, but just swung over to the shoulder and stopped. Martin Zapalac, driving behind the motorcyclist in a truck, pulled over to offer assistance. The man's hair was singed, and he was disoriented. He later went to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Kudos to the rider for keeping the shiny side up, and kudos to Martin Zapalac of Winlock, WA, for stopping to help instead of just zooming on by.

The lightning turned parts of his helmet into charcoal. Photo here:

Yikes.... I'd think he should go buy a Lotto ticket, but he has better odds of being hit by lightning again. :/

No doubt, I had a friend in high school who was struck twice, and survived both times. Unfortunately there was no Lotto back then.

I wonder if he was riding a BSA Lightning....or maybe a Thunderbolt?

Never been hit by lightning, but close, about 25 years ago. It appeared that the lightning struck in the ditch, about 20 feet away from me. I didn't really feel anything, but it "killed" the motorcycle for about 2-3 seconds. I suppose it had something to do with an electromagnetic field of some sort...

Wow, I guess the insulating effect of his rubber tires grounding him helped save his life!

Wow, that is really something, lucky devil! I bet he won't need a battery any more to start his motorcycle!

Rubber tires don't make a bit of difference for lightening. If he were insulated it wouldn't have struck him.
