I just bought a 2005 Quintrex aluminium boat that was built in South Carolina when Quintrex was trying to launch their boat business in the US. Anyone else have one or know why they quit building them here?
from what I heard from a boat dealer friend, Quintrex entered the US marketplace at a time when small boat sales were in a serious decline; they'd misjudged the marketplace.
Around the same time they opened up a plant here, other established USA small aluminum boat builders were going out of business. IIRC, Quintrex shut down their USA manufacturing very quickly when the boat sales didn't support the place.
I've a friend who sought out one of their center console fishing boats to keep at his place in Baja. It replaced a much heavier fiberglass boat which he liked, but had difficulty launching off of the many beach locations he'd tow it to for fishing. The aluminum boat is much lighter and they could launch/retrieve it much more easily. It is reasonably seaworthy for the conditions in the Sea of Cortez for 2-3 anglers and equipment.
Two years later and still own the Quintrex 420 Dory (140 in US) and I really love it. It's a solid boat, much better built than other US built aluminum boats I've owned in the past. I'd love to trade up to a 17-18 foot Quintrex if I could find one.
I too recently purchased a 2005 Quintrex Dory wide body, found on Craiglist.
Installed new 40 HP Tohatsu tiller motor, fabricated elevated floor with aluminum frame and on top 5/8” plywood with marine rug.
My son and I have taken it out several times and we love it!
We would like to communicate with anyone in the states that has one to exchange ideas and pics.
