Myself I would still buy a Harley over this Royal Enfield any day.
Move over Harley! There's a new kid in town. Actually, that's not true. Royal Enfield is hardly a new kid, having been producing motorcycles since 1901. But what is new is the position the venerable India-based manufacturer now holds: In 2014, the company sold more motorcycles than Harley-Davidson.
The numbers don't lie. According to The Times of India, Royal Enfield sold just over 300,000 bikes globally, compared to Harley's 267,000. That's pretty impressive.
I own one.....A 2000. They are in very different markets. What one does well the other doesn't. The R.E. is a small commuter bike while the Harley will handle the interstate's we have here much better. I won't ride mine on the interstate. It's simply too small and light. For running around town or a leisurely ride through the countryside it's great though.
Well then, Harley better get crackin' if they wanna stay in business.
Ironic but true. Their target market is aging out of riding, and there aren't as many bad ass wannabe's in the following generations. Bleeding edge 19th century technology and 21st century pricing isn't as appealing as it once was.
Victory is eating their lunch on the patriotism and design side, and everyone has them beat on performance. There is a time in the not too distant future when the bar and shield could collapse under their own debt and hubris and become a clothing/lifestyle brand that used to do motorcycles.
The new (Polaris) Indian is going to really eat into Harley. It has the made in USA chops and the performance is so far above and beyond what Harley can offer it's a no brainer.
Just the same, I wouldn't mind an Enfield. I love that classic British style.
