Actually, a Harley with stock exhaust is very quiet. Besides the increase in sound, the aftermarket exhausts would give you a 10% horsepower boost so almost every Harley has an aftermarket exhaust.

I'd like to see the dyno sheets, it's not only peak power but the area under the curve that's important. Stock H-D engines, like most relatively low RPM engines, usually benefit from a little back pressure.
Finally? Every HD leaves the factory meeting the same noise standards every other brand meets.
True. I just bought my brother's bike, a 2006 35th anniversary HD, a Dyna Super Glide. Original pipes and quite as can be. My friends and coworkers keep asking me to put Screamin Eagle pipes on or punching the baffles out.
I actually like it quiet. It's fuel injected, 6 gears, and I don't believe one word of this garbage that whatever pipes make it run with any more horsepower or blah blah blah.
Here, I'll scan through the rest of the comments that cite such rubbish. HD knew a bit about back pressure and what the engine needed....

Still waiting to see some engine dyno sheets and not seat-of-the pants dyno sheets. They're low RPM engines that generally benefit from a little back pressure in the system.

Hey, this is a Harley thread. There's no room for logic and science. This is about emotion! LOL!
Actually, HD air cooled mills benefit from scavenging. This is best achieved via "2 into 1" exhaust systems. And, while a bit of "back pressure" DOES promote low/mid-range torque, it strangles the engine in higher RPM applications. This is why HD's can "get off the line" but are done, after about 2500-3500RPM. At 4,000RPM, they simply "run outta breath." At 5500 RPM, they don't make torque OR HP!
I'm talking STOCK HD's here.
You don't want to see a dyno pull, it's embarrassing...

Years ago a friend had a mid-90s Buell with the 1200cc Sportser engine, I was really enjoying it the first time I rode it but at ~5K it was done , I much preferred my Guzzi 1100Sporti that pulled strongly between ~3-8K.
