Yeah, as can be seen by the blog, a lot of Chinese scoots rip off the styling of better known brands to make them look more reputable. I've heard some good word about the Tank, but otherwise the closest thing to a good "Chinese" scooter would be the Kymco, from Taiwan.
Anyway, for $5000, one can get a new Helix, or a used Silverwing, for goodness sake. You're definitely getting more bang for your buck.
Look for a used 250. When Honda introduced the Ruckus it came out in two engine sizes: 49cc and 250cc. The larger size attained sort of a cult status among those who like Battle Scooters, but I think it was only marketed up to around 2005, maybe 2006
I paid less than $6000 OTD for a new Burgman 400, way more bike than a 150.
As to the Chinese scooter issue I would say they have a niche with plenty of happy owners. I certainly wouldn't claim Japanese quality but that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people riding them quite happily. Check out the Scootdawg forum rather than a bloggers opinion.

I thought you were suggesting to buy them thats why I posted the link because it had info to the questions you should ask the dealer. I was not referring to quality I was referring to the fact that it may be hard to get support and parts. Yes I do read scooter forums by the way.
I paid $795 for a brand new scooter. It's a 49cc Motofino Q6 (or something like that). There's a scooter shop around where I live that services all scooters - from initial inspection to repairs and such - which is why I purchased this model. It can get to 40-45mph (depending upon rider weight) with great fuel efficiency, 90mpg.
I would suggest to all scooter riders to NOT GET A SCOOTER HELMET. Instead, get a full face (with shield) Motorcycle helmet. And try not to cheap out on one. Your head doesn't know the difference between hitting the pavement from a scooter or motorcycle. I also recommend full leather protection.
Other than that, I absolutely love my scooter and it's soooo much fun!
Why would anyone pay $5000 for a 150cc scooter? Think outside the marketing push and you will find that your $$ can go much further.
Because it's cool! The same reason that some people buy expensive cars, or a handbag that costs $600 instead of one which costs $50.
I've also had good things about the reliability of the Vespa brand which is attractive, and that they hold their value relatively well, which is also attractive.
Who cares the one that are laughing won't be the ones with road rash
The same ones that care about spending large sums of $$ thinking it somehow makes them look cool.
