What decade do you think produced the best Crime/Gangster flix, and tell us which decade your favorite Crime/Gangster flick was a part of. Then suggest 3 of your favorites that people should see if they never got around to seeing them before.

Your "vote" in the poll should be based off of which decade you think produced the best quality/story-lines/characters for Crime/Gangster films and then just tell us which decade your "favorite" film was released in. I just wanted to see if the votes in the poll for best decade will line up with your favorite movie pick.

Here is a good list to base your decision off of when you decide to vote...
List of crime films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My vote for best decade of Crime/Gangster flix is the 1990's
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crime_films:1990s

My favorite film in this genre is Blood In Blood Out which was also in the 90's

I would suggest these 3 films if you haven't seen them...

Road Dogz -

Splinter -

Bastards of the Party -
YouTube - Bastards of the Party on HBO, Traces Bloods and Crips in LA

90s for the sheer fact it had the 2 best gangster movies ever: Goodfellas and Casino.
The Godfather saga was great but it was fictional nonfiction if you know what I mean. Scarface was a little over the top though it's cult classic and I like it. I suggest people see the original Scarface (based on the real scarface Al Kapone).
But nothing can compare. Goodfellas and Casino were 100% true. Everything in both movies happened in real life. Great acting and music in both too. The only thing that's ever come close is the Departed.

I almost voted for the '90s for the sheer amount of crime and gangster movies that came out in that decade...as a matter of fact, now that I remember that L.A. Confidential came in '97, I almost want to change my vote. Casino and GoodFellas, while not my favorite movies by not my favorite director, were fairly historically accurate and seminal in their own right towards gangster movies. Plus, the 1990s, being the decade with arguably the highest crime rates in the history of the nation, was also one of the densest decades in terms of gangsta film production. Of course, who can forget Pulp Fiction? So I was that close to voting for the '90s.

However, there are several reasons I myself voted for the 1970s, so if I may, please allow me to lay these heavyweights on you:
The Godfather, Part I. The Godfather, Part II. Chinatown. Serpico. The French Connection. Dirty Harry. Taxi Driver.

Right there are 7 great reasons why I think the '70s was the greatest decade for crime and gangster movies.
The Godfather
is almost always ranked as one of the greatest movies of all time, much less the greatest crime/gangster movie. Superb acting by Brando, Pacino, de Niro and Duvall through those first two movies. One of the few cases in which the movie was actually better than the book it was based on. There were also other gems that came out in that decade, notably the tour-de-force Serpico, also starring Al Pacino in what I consider to be one of his greatest roles. Chinatown, while I completely hated the ending, was no less than a superbly crafted movie, and one of Jack Nicholson's better performances. The French Connection, another great classic with a terrific chase sequence. Dirty Harry had a magnum-toting Clint Eastwood, enough said.
And who can forget about the countless Blaxploitation movies???

Scorsese can make a great gangster movie. I love Casino, I love Goodfellas. In the 00s nothing beats Departed. As for 'hood' movies, my vote is for Menace to Society. Lastly theres a Brazillian movie called City of God and thats one violent masterpiece.

Cidade do Deus, or something like that? That's a pretty well-done movie as well. Violent as hell, but good.

This is a very tough decision to make. All the decades had some great crime genre movies in them. I would have to choose the 1940's as I am a fan of Film Noir.I like the hardboiled repartee in these type movies.
Double Indemnity
The Big Sleep
White Heat
My favorite film in this genre is The Petrified Forest a 1936 film with Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis.

Nothing against modern movies. Over the years, directors, actors, and executives have adapted movies to the changing tastes of the public and the developing technology of the film industry. Not that they've always been pleased about it.
