I liked The King's Speech quite a bit and was as unsurprised to see it (and Colin Firth) win as I was to see Bertie's triumphant speech at the end of the movie.

I'm a Baby Boomer who preferred The Social Network but am not crying in my Earl Grey about it.

The King's Speech was a really good movie, but it was also a typical crowd-pleasing overcoming-the-odds-type story. Sometimes the Best Picture of the year can be a great film in all aspects, but not necessarily a feel-good story.

Though I haven't seen " The Fighter " , I really felt Geofry Rush (sp ? ) got ripped in the best supporting actor catagory. I felt he so deserved it . He played beautifully against Mr. Firth in this film.
Agree, Geoffrey Rush seemed to be deserving of the OSCAR for BSA, but he was very gracious in his post-show remarks.

Not to be silly, but Rush would make a great person to play the role of Mr. Magoo should Hollywood ever be so smart to make a movie along those lines.

This made me smile. <s>

I was so disappointed that Geofrey Rush did not win the Oscar for this role. He was the best.

Default The King's Speech---

I saw this movie yesterday. One thing bothered me. How did royals to sit on that filthy, rat eaten sofa in the man's so called office? I would not expect a dog to sit on it but he had royals sit there?

Plus, his "office" was horrible looking anyway. I don't know who did the sets but IMO they went way overboard. At least his house was nice looking. I don't know what kind of message was given to make his office look like a wreck. One could slap some kind of nice paint on the walls at least.

Wondering what others thought. ???

Rats? How did you know it was eaten by rats. I didn't notice that, but I did notice that they were too poor to afford heat - did you see how bundled up they were? - so probably they couldn't afford a new sofa.

Rats were a meta fore. I didn't read the book so not sure why they could not afford a cleaner sofa. Hey, a cheap throw would have been better than the filthy cushions. They could be covered up. His house was nice. I guess one had to guess how cold it was since they didn't say they were cold or if they did I missed it. I know movies need to condense a lot to get to the main story so probably discussions about the heat wasn't included.

The point is did royals sit on the filthy sofa when they are use to finery? They did put on airs in some things, like what they were to be called, so why sit on a filthy sofa unless the royals don't put on airs about such things as that. Guess I need to ask someone who is an expert on royal etiquette and behavior.
