trends in movie making that are so rampant that they have become cliches. this is the one that IMO ruins more movies than any other: actors are too young - particularly female roles. and it just takes any realism right out of the movie when you get what basically amounts to Jessica Simpson or some 22 year-old model as the head of some department of the CIA. it doesn't happen!
just an example:
the movie SWAT (horrible movie on multiple levels) would have you believe that all law enforcement tactical teams are underwear models under the age of 25.
i, for one, don't need pretty people in my movies. i guess that movies are made for children and teenage boys because thats the only people they think they know how to market to.
Macho-Pig casting directors is the problem? I dont know, but its true that the unbelievable casting of sime ditzy-body gets to be the Lt. Detective, or Forensic-Specialist-Dr. In-Charge-of-Thrusting-Breasts up there while wearing V-necked sweater under her open Lab coat; are we listening to her diagnosis of what killed the victim? Basically, there are NO good roles in Hollywood for women above the age of 35 except maybe the soccer mom. Over 45? active-feisty Grandma or Divorcee tramp. Jane Fonda, Raquel Welch; all those great gorgeous gals...No meaty roles anymore.
I dont need pretty people in my movies either. That must be why I mostly watch the Indies (Independent Category) of Films when renting from NextFlix. Most of my choices are .... for the past 3 yrs..... are Foreign Films, Asian Extreme, or Independent Films.
More "quiet" deep plots, good dialogue, (when asked 'how was it?") I reply: "Just a Damned Good Story" ya know?

When did the Summer BlockBuster movies turn into this scene (over & over & Over)..."good guys running in slow motion from exploding fireball"....
That started in a Sly Stallone or Bruce Willis movie about 10 yrs. ago and has become the "standard big moment". in all the tripe leaving the L.A. studios!

is it macho-pig casting directors, or Hollywood going after the lowest common denominator? great post by the way.
2) I grew up with Motown, and I am trying not to dislike it because it's not the music's fault.
Anyway, there have been way too many feel-good scenes in which past difficulties are being put aside, people are bonding, and in the background, there is ALWAYS one of Motown's greatest hits. It is most often Ain't No Mountain High Enough, but it might also be Tina Turner howling out River Deep, Mountain High, or maybe it'll be Dancing in the Streets, or perhaps the Isley Brothers' Shout--you get the idea.
3) Any little kid who has grown-up dialogue. Yeah the shock value was funny the first time, but it has been way, way overdone.
I agree that meaty roles for women over 35 are not overly common, but there are some good ones out there: Judi Dench and Helen Mirren have been delving into some fascinating portrayals. Annette Bening had Being Julia.
Julianne Moore practically stole the show in Children of Men this year.
By far the most used cliche' in 98% of ALL movies is the variation of .."Wait here!"..("Stay here" etc.)
