You'd probably have to be around my age (50) to recall, but the 1970's through (roughly) the early 1980's were what I'd call the heyday of the made-for-TV movie. The major networks used to have a "movie of the week" or something like that. Sometimes they were OK and sometimes not.
I can remember watching titles such as "Gargoyles", "Birds Of Prey" (with David Janssen as an ex-World War II pilot flying a helicopter in pursuit of the bad guys), "The Disappearance Of Flight 412" (with a young David Soul), and a myriad of others. Often times they'd feature young actors who would later become well-known Hollywood names.
If shown nowadays I'm sure they would be somewhat corny and dated, but they were enjoyable "back in the day". Anyone have any positive/negative memories of these?
I remember "Birds of Prey"!
There was one called, "One of My Wives is Missing", Jack Klugman was a detective, Elizabeth Ashley (wasn't she gorgeous in her day), James Franciscus. The wife vanished then reappeared, the husband insisted she wasn't her!
I used to enjoy made-for-tv movies. Here are a few that I can remember right off the bat. I know I'm missing some other good ones.
Salem's Lot (1979)
Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)
Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978)
I Saw What You Did (1988)
Kiss Meets the Phantom was very cheesy, but being a KISS fan, I enjoyed it as a kid.
I actually got to go to Magic Mountain where they performed a concert that was part of the movie. As for the movie itself, I take the Fifth.
To answer the OP, wasn't "Duel," with Dennis Weaver, one of these types of movies? I remember even as children we would laugh at the over-the-top acting and drama, but it was still pretty scary and suspense-building. "...some sort of souped-up diesel!" LOL
Made for tv movies rock! They are cheesy in all the right ways. I personally do not think Syfy takes itself so seriously and I think the movies are meant to be tongue in cheek and not serious horror. I love Syfy movies!
There are some good ones. I think Mongol was a movie made for tv. It was fair.
