Can't believe "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" hasn't been mentioned.

Deliverance. Not because it's the best movie ever, although it is very good, but because there are so many references to it in popular culture that I think people should see it at least once to see what it's all about.

I also recommend Amelie, that movie was a great example of true film-making imho. It has drama, love, humor and a ton of imagination that if full of life.
Others that come to my mind:

- Seven Samurai or Yojimbo or When the Last Sword is Drawn.
- The Last Emperor
- Bettlejuice (it might be very informative for recently deceased)
- Interview with a Vampire
- Endless Love or Somewhere in Time
- Titanic
- Gladiator or Braveheart
- Once Upon a Time in America
- The Time Machine (1960)
- Westworld or The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
- Star Wars or Blade Runner or Terminator or The Alien or The Thing or E.T.(pick one)
- Wrist Cutters (gotta have an Indie on the list)
- Old Yeller or Hachi or The Bear (1988)
- The Blues Brothers or The Animal House or The Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Dumb and Dumber or Old School (whichever tickles your funny-bone)
- Ringu/Ring or The Changeling (1980) or the Omen or The Exorcist or Salem's Lot or The Silent Hill or In the Mouth of Madness (almost all guarantee unplanned pooping)

I will leave it at that.
