It also needed just 31 days to break the $550,000,000 barrier, 7 days less than 'Avatar' did in setting the record.
It also became just the fourth film to gross in excess of $20,000,000 in its fifth weekend, joing 'Avatar', 'Titanic' and 'The Sixth Sense' with that distinction.
The key to big box office TOTALS is REPEAT viewings, plain and simple. Titanic made $600 million domestically because a fair number of people were seeing it 2-4 times and that made up for the lower price of tickets in 1997-1998 which stood at around $5.25 if I'm not mistaken.
Although "The Avengers" has obliterated the opening weekend record previously held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2" with a take of $207 million in it's opening weekend DOMESTICALLY, I still think it will fall short in total of what "The Dark Knight Rises" will eventally take in, which I'm predicting will be in the neighborhood of $580 million.
"The Avengers" will have another phenomenal 2 weeks of box office and then I think there will be those who see it again but not many. My prediction for it's total will be $510 million which is still less than "The Dark Knight" in 2008 with $533 million. "The Dark Knight Rises" will see repeat viewings by MORE people. Count on it.
"The Avengers" now stands at $559 million domestically. I'm eating my words because I didn't think it would beat "The Dark Knight" at $533 million. I'm still thinking "The Dark Knight Rises" will surpass it though.
