I think the scariest movie will be what scared the crap out of you as a kid.
For me it was poltergeist.

Paranormal Activity, that's my choice for the scariest movie. I am a horror movie fan and have seen all the scary ones, none scared me as much as Paranormal Activity. I guess that is because it takes place in such an ordinary, everyday, urban setting that it poses a "credible threat"...it seems like something that could happen to you or me. Of course, I don't actually believe in the things that happen nor expect it to happen, but it did give me a big jolt psychologically like no other movie ever had done to me before, and I didn't sleep well for months after watching it , and resisted from watching PA 2 and PA 3 because of that.

On a sidenote, I don't really count "slasher movies" as "horror" per se, for me horror means something un-explained, paranormal or something I cannot control with traditional means. This is why Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw etc. never does anything for me...

"Rosemary's Baby"
"The Exorcist"
"The Amityville Horror"

The most frightening movies to me are the ones with enough plausability that you begin to think, "Yeah, that could happen."

None of the above. For me it is, and always will be, Ravenous. I've no idea why but that movie just scared the bejesus out of me and I don't scare easy.

Love that movie. I didn't think it was scary as much as it was just plain awesome.

(I can't decide on a vote...)

Wow, I'm surprised that's not even on here. Classic & great ghost story!

I remember that part where the guy is peeling off his face really grossed me out as a kid...

And Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Even when I first saw it 20+ years after it was originally released people were visibly reacting and even screaming. Imagine when it first came out and people were watching without knowing what to expect.
