I like movies that meet three basic criterion:

1. They are original stories (read: You can't guess each scene and what will happen and the outcome of the movie within the first 15 minutes).

2. The hero does NOT die (life is depressing enough - nothing like watching 2 hours of a movie cheering on the good guy, only to have him die in the last 5 mins).

3. You leave the theater and you're still talking and thinking about the movie at least 30 minutes later.

The only movies that stick in my mind that have met those criteria are older movies:

Stargate
6th Sense

I'm sure there's more, but they are the ones that jumped out in my mind.

I'd forgotten that I'd even started this thread, it's been so long since I did. My Netflix queue is getting short again, though, so keep 'em coming.

Ghostbusters. I want a proton pack and the Ecto-1 so I can drive it around and blast the Ray Parker Jr song at everybody.

"M" Most people have probably never seen it, it's a German movie from 1931. I saw it the first time in the 1970's while living overseas.

We still watch it from time to time...one of the few movies I can watch over and over again.

"Dr. Zhivago" is one of them. A true classic!!!

Fritz Lang's finest work.

Hard to choose for me... right now it's still Chinatown. At least that's what my second brain tells me.

Hitchcock is always fun. Basically any directors that know how to garner the true majesty of filmmaking. Fitzcarraldo is also a personal fave.

I love historical film, mainly Gladiator, The Alexander Great and the recent news Centurion. By the way, I like a film Forest Gump and many films with Tom Hanks, i.e. Terminal.
