I've built myself a decent home theater and don't go to the theater much these days. Maybe 2 a year or so on average. I generally have a "2 week rule". If I haven't wanted to see a movie so bad that I make it in the first 2 weeks of its run, then I can usually wait till it hits Netflix.
Between TCM on cable and Netflix, I've watched a ton of movies this summer. Just finished watching Citizen Kane and All The King's Men tonight off the DVR. Watched Blades of Glory DVD last night. Probably will watch Zodiac on Sunday. I love being able to drink a bottle of wine or have a beer while I'm watching. I also love being able to hit "pause" and go to the rest room without missing the movie.
I don't miss the unbelievably inflated food/drink prices or the people kicking my seat.
In this here household, we wait for the movies to come out on DVD. The movies are expensive and crowded and my old man is very shy and doesn't like to be around a lot of people. Blockbuster probably loves us!
This is a great question. I am becoming wearier and wearier of all the commercials that are run before the movie. It wears you down.I am not a person who will pay 3 to 5 dollars for a soft drink. There is a difference between profit and extortion. It is not necessary to run the concession commercials to the level that they do.I am like most people. If I love sci-fi,anything connecting to Spielberg I will see PDQ.Same with Westerns, action, comedy. If you have a real passion for an artist, you will see the movie and buy the DVD right away.
I would probably end up waiting for the releases to either come out on DVD, PPV or the movie channels. Movies are too expensive to go to every week. If I went every week to see a movie in the theater, I'd end up spending over $50 a month.
Sometimes there is just one must see movie though, and I'll end up paying the $10 or $11 to see it in the theater. But, that hasn't happened yet this year. I thought I would go see The Simpsons in the theater, but when it came out, I just wasn't as excited to see it right away anymore. So, I'll probably wait for DVD to see it.
I maybe go to the cinema twice a year if that often. I also like to relax with a glass of wine and not have to sit through half hour of adverts. Occasionally though, there are just some movies that warrant a trip to the big screen.
