3. Terminator - ALL the Terminators

I'm also a big fan of the zombie and apocalyptic movies also!
Agree on Gattaca, that movie was very profound.

Dune is probably the best sci-fi book ever but the worst sci-fi movie ever.

Moon was excellent and very good for those that like psychological thrillers/mysteries.

The Day the Earth Stood Still was also a classic although the 1950s produced several.
The brilliance of movies from that era are the hidden meanings (Cold War Era paranoia).

I suppose my favorite sci-fi movie would have to be "Bladerunner" followed by "The Truman Show".

The Truman Show? Great movie, but to quote your earlier post to BoxCar Willie:

"Not sci-fi "

I would have to vote for THE BOOK OF ELI as one of the best in the last decade.
I remember one that Charlton Hesston starred in back in the 1960's that was decent (remake recently I AM LEGEND?).
Some of the old Sci/Fi movies that I loved back in the 50's and 60's now seem really hokie. i.e. Steve McQueen classic THE BLOB. When I saw it at a midnight thrill show in 196o(?) it scared the crap out of me. Recently I saw it on TV LAND and it came across more as a comedy to the young kids.
I left out DAY OF THE TRIFIDS and I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE. Good story lines and left you to use your imagination instead of special effects.

I guess we all have different definitions of what is sci-fi and what isn't. I don't really consider Alien to be a sci-fi movie; to me, it's a monster movie that takes place in outer space. But other people do consider it sci-fi. Same with Star Wars; it's a war movie set in outer space.

I think the conventional view is that Alien is a horror film

Aliens, however, is a sci-fi film

Here is another classic that I have always enjoyed: The Time Machine from 1960.

I will have to agree with those who picked Blade Runner. It actually tied the first place at first thought, the plot, visuals, acting and characters in that movie were simply superb.

Still, Forbidden Planet's sub plot (extinct advanced civilization) really affected me. It had amazing special effects and the movie itself influenced so many other movies that came after it.
