Saw the highly acclaimed silent film THE GENERAL (1927) last night starring Buster Keaton (who I feel is overrated, imho). However, I love The General ...and the print I saw was spectacular and crystal clear (aired on TCM a few days ago).

I was wondering if a filmmaker would ever again make a silent film in this day and age? Does anyone think they could work? I kind of feel that the PIXAR short films are kind of the same, but they may be too short.

Opinions?

I finally got around to watching that last night off my DVR, too.

I don't see any reason why making one now would not work. Mel Brooks made Silent Movie back in the 70s (which actually had one line of dialogue in the whole movie). But Hollywood would probably be reluctant to gamble with one, so it would probably be a small budget art house sort of thing.

Absolutely could work.
Probably wouldn't break $100 million at the box office, though.

What I mean by "work" is whether it would be able to make its money back and more.

Well, in that case, a silent film from Hollywood would probably not "work".
I'm sure some people have spent much time trying to figure out how to re-package Fantasia for the MTV generation(s), but I don't think I've seen any viable products.
I think it would have to be an art-house film. Which MIGHT "work". A little bit.

Smile Success of "The Artist" is inspiring!

Having heard the hype about the silent film, "The Artist" I had to watch it although I remained dubious that I would enjoy a film with no audiable dialogue.

I was actually so impressed with how entertaining the film was and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it and was not bored at one point throughout the film. It was actually "The Artist" that inspired a in-house silent movie production to promote one of our services at PCM Ltd.

Although the film is more Charlie Chaplin than The Artist, we were very pleased with the results of our filming and production and have since had a lot of success and interest!

This age of texting and skyping and Facebooking has eroded our attention spans.

No. A silent film would fail miserably.

It could probably be good but I dont think they would make it due to how much money they would not make.
