The Exorcist. After watching it, even for the umpteenth time, I jump at strange noises.
I agree. The Directors cut was even more so. With the subliminal "flashes" throughout the movie. Unknown terror, No hope of escape and a protagonist (If there is one) that is unstoppable.
Also scary.-
The Entity.
Black Christmas.
The Brood (That scene-Ugh!!)
The Thing (1982)
The Hitcher
Inside (Will never watch again and the only one I quit before the end.)
Blair Witch project
REC
Halloween (1978)
I still find the original Night of the Living Dead scary ... the fact that it's in black and white heightens the tension for me and makes me afraid of shadows afterwards.
I will also nominate 3/4 of Paranormal Activity as scary.
For me, it's scary if it seems like it's something that may actually happen (a reason why I never found the Exorcist or Halloween scary). The British docudrama Threads, about nuclear war and it's after effects on society, scared me more than any horror film I've watched.
For an actual horror film, I found Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer quite unsettling. And the film Spoorloos (the Vanishing), though I'm not sure if it's really considered a "horror" film. The original Dutch film, not the awful American remake with Sandra Bullock where the ending was completely changed!

Exorcisms happen. An indestructible killer walking around slashing everyone, not so much.
I liked Spoorloos and found it more creepy than scary.
The best scary movies are ones that have intelligent characters who do the logical thing, and still get out smarted by the evil beings.
Movies where the plot only works if the characters do one stupid thing after another in order to set up the next fright scene don't scare me much.
Alien is a great scary movie to me because Ripley is an intelligent character, even if some of her crew members aren't.
That's the question folks, Halloween is not that far off and I'm wondering just what movies scare the pants off YOU!
And conversely, what frightens other people but makes you just say "meh"
Don't have the mindset to come up with top 10, but Poltergeist (the original) always scared me to death. If I run across it channel surfing when I'm alone I turn it off!
I hate blood and gore slasher movies.
I like scary movies that mess with your mind like The Shining.
